There are tons of celebrity-moms that roam the streets of Hollywood with their babies in toe, making us feel like procreating is the norm. But what about the women who have never had children? Although initially it was hard to bring these women to mind, the truth is there are a lot more celebs who are not moms than we think. Some of these women made the choice not to have children in favor of focusing on their careers while other women really did want to become mothers (or still do) but struggled with infertility issues throughout much of their adult lives.

Whatever the case may be, there are many women who have warm and nurturing characteristics who we assume are moms – but actually aren’t. Some of these will be surprising; especially for the older women on this list who grew up in a time when not being a mom was practically unheard of. Then we have others who we just assumed was a parent since many other celebs in their age category boast about how much they love being a mom. We assumed more celebs would jump on the motherhood train, being how popular it is among the Hollywood scene but this is not the case. Here are 15 celebs you though were moms – but aren’t!

15 Renée Zellweger - Bridget Jones Was, But She Isn't

Although playing the role of a pregnant woman in Bridget Jones’ Baby, Renee Zellweger surprisingly enough has never had children of her own. Zellweger is another successful actor and an Oscar winner but has never played to role of mom in real life.

Zellweger admits to not being a planner, but instead being open to the possibilities in life. She has been with her current boyfriend, Doyle Bramhall, for four years but they do not have any children. She seems to have no regrets about this and at 47, she seems pretty content with her life. When asked if she regrets not being a mom, she replied, “I’ve never been that deliberate about my life and the things that I would require in order to be happy.” And why shouldn’t she be happy? She is a successful woman and Academy Award winner, after all.

14 Winona Ryder - Dated Depp And Damon

Although Winona plays a dedicated mom of two boys on the Netflix hit series Stranger Things, it is surprising to note she is not a mom in real life, especially when she plays her mom role so well! Ryder, now 45, has dated notable celebrity men including Johnny Depp and Matt Damon but never had children of her own.

Now that Ryder is back in the scene playing the character Joyce, she admits that people question her ability to play such a role because she doesn’t have her own children. She says the best she can do is compare it to being an aunt to her own niece, "I know nothing could compare [to being a mother], and I haven’t had that experience, but when my niece was born, I felt like I would jump in front of a car and die for this little person I didn’t even know yet." Ryder remains the devoted Auntie, with no plans to start a family of her own in the future.

13 Chelsea Handler - Riding That Spinster Life

On the surface, Chelsea Handler seems to love children. She is good friends with many celebrity moms including Gwyneth Paltrow and Drew Barrymore and she is known to have her niece featured on her Netflix show, Chelsea, alongside her. But if you follow the 42 year old comedian a little closer, you would know she is not planning on having a family of her own anytime soon.

While it’s true Handler loves kids, she is pretty public about enjoying her freedom as an unwed, unattached, non-mom. She brags about doing whatever she wants, having her mansion to herself and enjoying what life has to offer – without kids. Kids aren’t for everyone and not every woman is destined to be a mother, and this is okay. There are many other wonderful things women can do to contribute to society besides being a parent. Chelsea, for example, is leaving her Netflix series behind, while she jumps into the political scene on a quest to help more women be elected to Congress.

12 Queen Latifah - Maybe She'd Adopt

Queen Latifah is a powerhouse actor and singer who brightens every project she is a part of but she also has a spot on our list of celebrity women who are not moms. But, unlike some of the other celebrity women on the list, Latifah admitted she is ready to start a family just this past summer to US Magazine, after finally getting “partying” out of her system.

Back in an interview in 2012 with Barbara Walters, Latifah mentioned she was interested in adopting a child, so it definitely makes us wonder if this is the route she is going to take. Latifah is currently 47, and although other celebrities have gotten pregnant in their late forties, her age does make us think adoption is more likely. Regardless of how Latifah becomes a mom, her fans are certainly behind her, agreeing she would make a wonderful mother, when the time is right.

11 Jennifer Aniston - NO! Stop Asking!

With the number of times Jennifer Aniston has been under the radar for possibly sporting a baby bump, you would think she would have 10 kids by now. But the truth is Aniston is one celebrity who has never been a mom. Aniston broke out into the Hollywood scene as Rachel on the 90s sitcom Friends and was popular in the media while being married to dream boat Brad Pitt from 2000-2005. Since Divorced, this 48 year old has since remarried to spouse Justin Theroux, when she tied the knot in 2014.

Aniston is constantly under “bump watch” by the media and claims she resents the societal pressure for women to become mothers. "[I don’t] like [the pressure] that people put on me, on women — that you’ve failed yourself as a female because you haven’t procreated. I don’t think it’s fair […] You may not have a child come out of your vagina, but that doesn’t mean you aren’t mothering — dogs, friends, friends’ children." I hear you, Jenn. Can we just leave her alone, already?

10 Kim Cattrall - Just Too Busy

We all know Kim Cattrall as the fabulous Samantha on Sex and The City, living and loving the single life. And just like her character, Kim Cattrall has never had children in real life – but she did once consider it. Unlike Samantha, Kim has been married, several times, and did state at one point that she thought about starting IVF treatments in 1998 with her third husband Mark Levinson – but eventually decided against it.

Kim Catrall made the decision to not have children because of the grueling Sex and the City filming schedule. As she comments, “I thought to myself, ‘Wow, I have 19-hour days on this series. … My Monday morning would start at 4:45 a.m. and go to one or two in the morning. How could I possibly continue to do that [and have a baby], especially in my early 40s?’”. Kim effectively chose her career over being a mom and although it is not a decision all women would make, she seems to have no regrets.

9 Dolly Parton - Fertility Issues

Dolly Parton is another celebrity superstar whom I greatly look up to. At 71, she has a fabulous music career and also has dipped into acting and producing as well. Although Dolly has been married for 45 years, she is not a mom and actually came out publically as being unable to have children.

Sadly her fertility issues have landed her in bouts of depression and over the years, she refocused her pain into her music, which has credited her with much. Dolly is truly a country music icon. She is known for her loud personality which she channels in her outfits, hair and makeup when performing. She has also been known for her wise words, including one of my favorite quotes: “Find out who you are and do it on purpose.”

8  Dame Helen Mirren - A Stepmother

Helen Mirren is a wonderful actor who has been in many great films including The Queen. She was born in England and has previously been trained in Shakespearean drama and started her career with the Royal Shakespeare Company. Helen is 71 and although she has played various roles that have depicted her as a mother, she has never had kids of her own.

Helen did, however, become a step mother in 1997, when she married a father of two children. She admits to caring for them very much but also has been quoted as saying she has “no maternal instinct whatsoever”. Helen is on the list many successful female actors who have never had children of their own, but instead have had lucrative careers in both theatre and film.

7 Condoleezza Rice - Never Wanted Kids

Not so much an actor but very much in the public eye, this former White House employee lands herself on our list of women who surprisingly have never had children. Although it’s clear that this former Secretary of State was likely too busy focusing on career in politics, it is interesting to hear she isn’t a mom because of how passionately she speaks about many political issues involving children.

At the age of 62, Condoleezza has never been married and never had kids – and she is okay with it. When asked about procreating, she replied, "You mean, did I ever want kids? No. I think maybe it's because I'm an only child. I like children, but especially when they're 18. I didn't start out not to get married and have children. I don't regret that I couldn't pass on some of my genes, which sounds so incredibly narcissistic, but that I couldn't pass on some of the opportunities." Career woman to the core, this woman is driven and focused in her professional endeavors.

6 Cameron Diaz - It's Just Not Happening

Shifting our focus back to the Hollywood scene, I was surprised to find out that outgoing and enthusiastic Cameron Diaz makes our list of women who have never had kids. Although she has dated some very high profile celebs including Jared Leno, Alex Rodriguez and Justin Timberlake, this popular actor has never married and at age 44, she is still not yet a mom.

Despite not being a mother, Cameron has had an extremely lucrative acting career and remains very popular and successful. My first vivid memory of her acting ability was her performance in There’s Something About Mary. She has since been in dozens of other films including a favorite to pull out this holiday season, The Holiday, with Jude Law, Jack Black and Kate Winslet.

5 Oprah Winfrey - Had A Baby That Did Not Survive

At 63, Oprah remains one of the most successful women in Hollywood, as an actor and talk show host extraordinaire but also an icon of her generation. Although she remains very successful, Oprah is not a mother. This fact comes with a bit of sadness, as Oprah did once have a baby when she was very young who did not survive.

According to family friends, Oprah was sexually abused as a child and became pregnant at 14. When the baby’s father did not approve of her pregnancy, Oprah took matters into her own hands attempting to terminate the pregnancy on her own. Although her methods did not terminate it right then and there, she did later give birth to a still born baby. Oprah has not been pregnant nor had any children since but instead uses her story to help women overcome abuse and trauma.

4  Lily Tomlin - Family Of Two

Lily Tomlin is another actor I greatly admire! From her breakout performance as a cast member on the variety show Rowan & Martin's Laugh in the 70s to her days voicing the lovable Ms. Frizzle in the 1994-1997 children’s cartoon The Magic School Bus and now her current role as Frankie on the hit Netflix series Grace and Frankie (where she was nominated for an Emmy), Tomlin remains one of the most celebrated women in Hollywood.

It is interesting to note, however, that at age 77, the Hollywood star has never had children. Tomlin has been with long time partner Jane Wagner for decades (and the two recently got married in 2013) but the couple never had children of their own, and Lily and Jane remain content as a family of two.

3 Betty White - Married 3 Times

Betty White, the first on our list of celebs you thought were moms, is one of my Hollywood idols and at 95 years old, she is still in the acting business. I found it interesting when I learned that Betty had never had children. She grew up in a time where many women were pressured to have kids but she is not a mother.

Despite never having kids, Betty has an amazing career, being one of the first women in Hollywood to ever produce a sitcom and currently holds the record for the longest career of any female actor. Betty was married 3 times, the first two husbands she divorced but her third husband she was widowed in 1981, when her husband Allen Ludden passed away. This did not stop Betty, as she continues to have a wonderful film career and is a truly inspiring woman. Ludden had 3 children from a previous marriage and Betty claims they are still a part of her life today.

2 Ellen DeGeneres - Moms To Dogs

If you follow Ellen on Instagram (and I do) you would see that she posts and reposts many photos of babies and toddlers. Although she is married to her longtime partner Portia de Rossi, the pair never had children. This was surprising to me because of how fond of children she seemed to be, especially on her talk show Ellen.

It turns out the couple did at one point considering having a family but then decided against it, “We talked about it for a minute, about four years into the relationship, but we just decided we like our conversations not being interrupted and our furniture without sticky grape juice on it.” Although the couple seems happy with their decision, Ellen does admit to loving children and can’t get enough of them on her talk show.

1 Tyra Banks - Recent Mama Update

We all know the beautiful Tyra Banks primarily as a model but also featured on several seasons of the television series America’s Next Top Model as a judge and searcher of new blood in the modeling industry. Interestingly enough, Tyra is among the female celebrities who are not mothers but the difference is that this has not been by choice and that she still wants to be one.

In 2015, Tyra opened up about her struggles to have children and her desire to be a mom. She broke down after followers questioned her on social media about why she did not have kids and she reported responding with, “you don’t know what I’m going through.” Tyra’s story is a good reminder that we should all be sensitive to those around us. Just because a couple doesn’t have children, doesn’t mean that is their choice. There may be issues under the surface, so it’s a good idea to remember to be kind and considerate. Tyra, now 43, continues to hope for a family one day.
